Hybrid Coffee Roasting/ハイブリッドコーヒー焙煎

Ever since I got this second-hand toaster oven for 500 yen January last year, I’ve been thinking of hybrid coffee roasting. By hybrid, I mean drying coffee beans in the electric toaster oven first and then roasting them (causing chemical reactions) in my perforated shallow pot over the portable gas stove. Today, I have made my very first attempt.
Toaster oven:

The timer (center) is broken, and the temperature control (right) seems not effective any more.

Luckily, I found this metal sieve at the second hand store, which fits perfectly in this toaster oven. It was 450 yen.

It goes right inside the toaster oven. I didn’t have to make any modifications to the sieve or the toaster oven.

 I just put the sieve in the toaster oven, without preheating, and closed the door..

My perforated shallow pot

I opened the door every two minutes (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 minutes) after the start of roasting, shook the sieve to ensure even roasting (drying). It was obvious to me that the beans had not been dried sufficiently even after 10-minute heating. I decided to transfer the beans to the pot and dry them fully.

I roasted the beans in the pot over high heat, covered with aluminum foil, in an attempt to accelerate the drying process. First crack started around 15:30. I continued to roast for three more minutes.

I managed to roast them satisfactorily.

Weight loss: 16.2%

I have to think of ways to dry coffee beans efficiently in the electric toaster oven.
